Minimum Wages in a Unionised Economy

چکیده

This paper aims at contributing to the employment e ects of minimum wages in a unionised economy. In a dual labour market model, the rst sector outcome is characterised by bargaining between unions and rms, while in the second sector rms have to pay a statutory minimum wage. The model shows that a minimum wage increase has negative employment effects only if the bargaining outcome is described by the Nash solution. However, this result does not hold if we instead apply the Kalai-Smorodinsky solution to model union bargaining. A higher minimum wage can then lead to more employment in the unionised sector and to a lower total unemployment rate.

Optimal Capital Taxation in Economies with Unionised and Competitive Labour Markets

According to the existing literature, capital taxes should not be imposed in the presence of optimal profit taxation in either unionised or competitive labour markets. We show that this conclusion does not hold for an economy with dual labour markets, where the competitive wage rate provides the outside option for unionised workers. Even with non-distortionary profit taxation it is optimal for ...

Strategic investment and international outsourcing in unionised oligopoly

We critically consider the conventional belief that the attractiveness of international outsourcing lies in cheaper labour costs overseas and that it offers a means to ‘escape’ the power of unions. We develop an oligopoly model in which firms facing unionised domestic labour market choose between producing an intermediate in-house or outsourcing it to a non-unionised foreign supplier that makes...

The Union Membership Wage Premium: An Analysis Using Propensity Score Matching

This paper estimates the size of the union membership wage premium by comparing wage outcomes for unionised workers with ‘matched’ non-unionised workers. The method assumes selection on observables. For this identifying assumption to be plausible, one must be able to control for all characteristics affecting both union status and wages. This requires very informative data. We illustrate the val...

The Effect of Minimum Wage on Iran's Macroeconomic Variables in The Framework of a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Model

In this paper ,in order to investigate the economic effects of the minimum wage policy on macroeconomic variables in the framework of the new Keynesian theory, a dynamic stochastic equilibrium general (DSGE) model has been simulated and estimated for an open and small oil exporter economy conforming with the structure of Iran's economy in the range from 1370 to 1395 .In the above mentioned mode...
